Invitation

We would like to take the opportunity to invite you to take part in the Open Education Conference (OpenEd 2010) that will be held in Barcelona on 2-4 of November, 2010. This 7th Edition of the OpenEd conference has as its theme OER: Impact and Sustainability and is the result of the collaboration of the three hosting institutions: Brigham Young University, the Open Universiteit Nederland, and Universitat Oberta de Catalunya.

The general objective of the conference is to give a space for discussion, research, practice sharing, and community building around the Open Education and Open Educational Resources (OER) movement, concentrating primarily, but not exclusively, on issues dealing with OER’s coming-of-age. The OpenEd conference is increasingly recognized as the international forum for those who wish to present and discuss their innovations and/or research projects, andl for those who wish to learn about the institutional decisions needed to make open education a reality.

On this occasion we propose to discuss and give a boost to OER initiatives that are emerging and consolidating around the world. For this reason, and under the theme “OER: Impact and Sustainability” we would like to learn about and discuss OER and other Open Education projects, how they are designed, implemented and sustained, what their business models are, what the different communities of learners need to allow OER projects to become a transforming engine for education, improving learning outcomes, and facilitating access to education to more and more people.

For this reason, the conference will contain the following conference strands:

  • Long term sustainability of open education projects
  • International copyright and intellectual property rights issues
  • Lessons learned from Open and Distance Learning for the Open Education movement
  • How OER differ from other digital educational resources.
  • Open education policy and strategy
  • Best cases in OER
    • Are they designed differently (do standard design principles like the split attention effect apply?)
    • Are they used differently (do standard practices for effective use of media apply?)
    • What’s really different about OER?
    • Do they deserve a separate label?
  • Open Ed on the cheap

We strongly encourage your submission of abstracts and your attendance in order to make OpenEd 2010 the most international and interdisciplinary forum on Open Education that exists. The Call for Proposals will be announced on 1 February 2010; the submission deadline is 15 May 2010.

We look forward to seeing you in Barcelona!
