Information for Delegates (if your Spam Filter worked too well)

August 10, 2009

Last Friday, we sent an information email to everybody coming to OpenEd09. We might have missed you if you registered after 3:00 P.M. or if your spam filter worked a little too well. Hopefully, you’ll see this and see all the wonderful OpenEd09 goodness in store for you plus a little more socializing:

  • Pre-Conference Events:

Dialogue Between David Wiley and Stephen Downes
On Tuesday, Aug. 11, 9:00 A.M. - 4:00 P.M. in the Historic Courtroom 301 of the Vancouver Art Gallery, David Wiley and Stephen Downes will be holding a day long dialogue on a wide variety of topics. They have graciously agreed to make this a public discussion. The hope is that this will form the basis of a future book. As always, it’s a good idea to let people know and sign-up.

OnCore BluePrint Pre-Conference on Sustainable Repositories
The OnCore BluePrint project, a FIPSE-funded project to develop “a blueprint for establishing statewide digital content repositories for all subject areas in postsecondary education,” has announced a 1-day conference to precede the Open Education conference on Tuesday, August 11 in Vancouver BC at UBC Robson Square. The conference will focus on creating and sustaining educational repositories. For more information, visit their website at: http://www.oncoreblueprint.org/conference.htm

  • Conference Venue:

For information on how to get to UBC Robson Square, where to go once inside, and where to eat, please visit the Locations page. All three keynotes will be held in Theatre C300, while all concurrent sessions will be held at C180, C150, C100. Unconference sessions will be facilitated in C130. Please check program.

  • Registration:

Please proceed to the Registration Desk in front of Theatre C300 on the Classroom Level. Registration Desk hours are as follows:

  • Wednesday, Aug. 12, 7:00 A.M. - 4:15 P.M.
  • Thursday, Aug. 13, 7:00 A.M. - 4:15 P.M.
  • Friday, Aug. 14, 7:00 A.M. - 1:30 P.M.

Wear your badges at all times. It verifies your registration at the conference. It will also get you one free pass to see the exhibits at the Vancouver Art Gallery, located next door to the conference venue, any time the Gallery is open August 12-14th.

On the evening of Thursday, August 13th, the conference is pleased to be hosting a screening and panel discussion entitled “Expression, appropriation, and the law.” This free event is open to the public, and sign-up is required.

  • Internet Access

Wireless Internet Access is available to all delegates within the UBC Robson Square Campus. Please choose the “ubc” network, open your browser, and please see the pocket program schedule distributed when you sign-in on Wednesday for login information.

  • Food and Beverages

We will be providing beverage service and snacks on-site, we will NOT be offering catered lunches this year. Our thinking was that people could use the time to get outside for a break, and to choose whatever food they liked. There is a wide array of options for all budgets and tastes near the venue, and we will provide you with a few recommendations at the conference. We’ve reduced the registration fees accordingly, and have set aside 90 minutes for the mid-day break.

Please note that Opening Remarks start at 8:45 A.M. everyday in Theatre C300. Try to get to the main theatre before then.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact any of us. For more information, you can always visit our website or visit the conference wiki.

We would be remiss if we didn’t take this opportunity to thank all of the volunteers who are helping make this conference happen, as well as our incredibly generous sponsors who have both helped keep the conference more affordable as well as sponsor three people to attend who otherwise could not be with us. Thanks very much!

So welcome one and all to our beautiful city, we look forward to meeting you and conspiring to create more openness, everywhere.
