Session Description: Now that so many of the elements of formal and non-formal education are becoming open, how can we improve the ways in which we use them to learn? How can we accelerate learning in complex knowledge domains? How do we avoid static understandings when what we need are open, flexible ways of thinking that can be adapted to novel circumstances? CFT is a learning theory made for our growing abundance of open resources, open people, and open knowledge tools. It holds critical insights and methods for learning with openness. Conceived in the age of hypertext, CFT explains how our minds master conceptual complexity. CFT methods accelerate learning in ill-structured domains and improve our ability to use what we’ve learned in multiple, dynamic contexts. Coupled with open Web 2.0 and 3.0 technologies, CFT 3.0 informs powerful techniques for learning and for teaching. Learn from Rand Spiro, originator of CFT , and Christine Geith, a leader in open education in the context of real-world grand challenges, and see examples of the application of version 3.0 of CFT in open contexts from food safety to history.
