Session Title: Connecting Online Learning Through Identity
Presenter: King Chung Huang, Technology Solutions Analyst, University of Calgary
Time & Date: 3:30 P.M. - 4:15 P.M., Wednesday, August 12, 2009
Location: Rm. C100
Session Description: Open content and tools are prominent elements of open education techniques. A more subtle facet has received less development: that of identity. People and groups usually exist as actors in the applications they use. But, when these and other identities are decoupled from applications, and treated as distinct entities by themselves, interesting possibilities emerge in how we might form and manage online learning networks. In this paper, the investigator will present a model where identities, content, and applications exist as distinct elements, related to each other in a pattern that brings together Web 2.0, Identity 2.0, cloud computing, and other patterns into one coherent system. New approaches to identity expression, content portability and preservation, and application management will be explored under this model. Implications and opportunities for post-secondary institutions will also be examined.
