Session Title: An Approach to the Problems of Personalisation and Context Dependency in Open Educational Resources
Presenter: Derek Chirnside, Senior Educational Designer, University of Canterbury, Christchurch
Location: Rm. C100
Time & Date: 10:15 A.M. - 11:00 A.M., Wednesday, August 12, 2009
Session Description: This presentation will consider the problems of personalisation and context at the micro level as impediments to the effective further use of open educational resources. The personal elements such as style, approach or even bias can reduce the future value of a resource. Strong context related features can have a similar effect. We now have some data from several projects: a school based resource development initiative both local and national in scope, an open course at a College of Education and a team based professional development project. We will suggest a way ahead that leverages off small open or closed networks which use, critique and refine materials. Certain habits seem to be effective in this process, benefiting from a technology connection to support and communicate as well as a recognition of different work styles and roles in team members.
